According to Kojima, PlayStation Studios informed Kojima Productions in June 2026 that it had decided to withdraw from the Physint project. The studio searched for a new partner over the past three months to continue the project and reached an agreement with Xbox as a result of the negotiations.
Kojima stated that Physint is an important project for both himself and Kojima Productions. He specifically emphasized that the game had not been canceled and that development was continuing.
Xbox has also officially confirmed that its partnership with Kojima Productions has expanded. Xbox CEO Asha Sharma said the company was pleased to support Kojima’s creative vision and his desire to challenge established conventions in the gaming industry.
Physint is not the first project being developed between Kojima Productions and Xbox. The parties are currently also working together on the horror game OD. With the new agreement, their partnership will expand further.
According to Xbox’s statement, the parties will also work together on film and television projects in the future, alongside games. However, it has not yet been revealed what subjects or IPs these projects will cover.
Will PHYSINT Be an Xbox Exclusive?
Physint was first announced in January 2024 during a State of Play presentation as part of a partnership with Sony. The project was presented as a next-generation action-spy game aiming to erase the boundaries between games and cinema. At the time, Kojima Productions confirmed that the project was being developed together with Sony Interactive Entertainment.
The transfer of publishing rights to Xbox does not automatically mean that the game has become an Xbox exclusive. Xbox and Kojima Productions have not yet announced which platforms Physint will be released on. It is still unknown whether the game will also launch on PlayStation, as well as when it will be released.
Kojima Productions previously announced that the cast of Physint would include names such as Charlee Fraser, Don Lee, and Minami Hamabe. It was stated that the project was in the early stages of production, with the main focus on concept development, casting, scanning, and performance capture processes.
Thus, despite Sony’s withdrawal from the project, development of Physint has not been halted. Hideo Kojima and his team now plan to reshape the action-spy genre with Xbox’s support.
